Muse Fusion in January - Ready? Set? Go!

Comment here with prompts for our Torn World writing, arting, and worldbuilding team--and for any new creators who want to play along!  (Our guidelines are here.)

EDIT:  We are closed to new prompts until next time, though our creators are still likely to use them for inspiration, finishing things they've started over the weekend or starting new things.  This weekend in particular, I've had trouble posting comments to Live Journal, so there may be already-created work that isn't listed yet.  You're welcome to stop by here or at www.tornworld.net to see what else we create from them.

We're standing by to write and draw furiously to your prompts, starting today (now!), running through the weekend and closing on Monday at noon (Alaska time). As a prompter or a creator, you may hop in for a few moments in this window of time, or throw yourself all-out at the Fusion for the full time!

Prompts: Let us know what you want to see! Do you want to know what a character's opinion on a subject is? Want to see a particular plant or animal in action? Maybe you'd like to hear a dialogue between two characters on a particular topic! A prompt can be specific, or general. One-word prompts are welcome, as are picture prompts, or links. Cross-over fanfiction can be requested, though not all participants may be interested in creating it. The only major restriction for prompts is that they should be appropriate to Torn World--but it's a big world, and not all of it is explored yet. You may treat it like a Q&A session - where you get your answers in fiction, artwork and poetry instead of just a boring answer. (Though you may get a straight answer, also, and you may get links to stories or articles that already address your question.)

You do not need to be a member of, or familiar with, Torn World to leave some prompts. Something like 'A Feather'd Cap' or 'something purple' is plenty specific, or you can make a general theme request like 'an accident' or 'a story about sea monsters.' You can also ask a specific question, like 'Why are there no high cities in the Empire?' or 'Are there any myths about frogs?'

Please consider leaving a couple of prompts that match our current and upcoming contest themes:  Fashions and Fads and Critters of Land and Sea.

Feel free to leave more than one prompt; we try to ensure that everyone gets one prompt answered, and that's easier if you leave us some choices.

Drafts: Please keep in mind that rough drafts created from our Muse Fusion will be going through a review process to maintain overall world continuity - any drafts shared with you during the Muse Fusion may be changed before being posted as canon contributions.

Chat: Also, you are welcome to join us in chat while we create, in our usual chat room (I don't know how to find the link Ellen usually uses, though it's in the last Muse Fusion post). Or, join the #tornworld channel via IRC on the starchat.net server. I will be dropping in throughout the weekend as I am able! Use the dropdown to make a noise if you join and no one says hello - sometimes we're busy creating in another window... (The chat relies on java and unfortunately does not work in Safari. Some sounds are only available through the javachat option, not IRC.)

Incentives: I'm posting because Ellen has a terrible cold; Ellen and I didn't have a chance to discuss incentives, but I'll offer 1 point of karma for every prompt left, up to 10 points per prompter! Work that makes it through the canon board already gets karma, but there will be an incentive donated for creators!  I'll get together with Ellen as to what it will be, so if you want to influence us, send me a private message. Get your work submitted to the canon board by Monday, January 23 to be entered into this drawing (That gives you a little over a week to finish up!). Shipping is included!

Questions?  Let me know!  I'll see if I can help with Torn World information or whatever else will help you have a productive weekend.

Ready? Set? Go!

The latest fad among Affamarg teenagers.
The latest fad in Affanumuur (Shameless City).
Fashions for Toddlers

The coolest new toy

Invasive insects or rodents
Fossils (maybe living fossils?)
A soft-shell critter that's good eating, if you prepare it right
Tiny Relatives of the Jellyrigger

New "mystery art" -- Character portraits to be identified later (I'd love some Land Priestess art! A few of them are described in this story.)

I've drafted an article about the Grapejelly, a tiny relative of jellyriggers.
Thanks for taking charge of this, Deirdre! Here are a few prompts before I head back to bed again:

A dangerous fad
Fashionably late
Exotic spice
Shoes in blue
Silk and summer lilies

Prompt Filled

From the prompt "A dangerous fad" I got the poem "Unlicensed Dreams." It tells how the Empire discovered dreamers' liquor shortly after meeting the Duurludirj.

A collection of fancy necklines, without names so they can be given Southern ones:

This artic food web would be wonderful if redone for the North:
Tusk shells, a type of arctic sea shell:

"I dare you to try it!"
An Ancient fad preserved in the remnants of the Ruined Port.
Songs that turn into earworms because they're so popular that everyone is singing them, and a week later everyone is sick of hearing them.
A new type of Ancient bead is discovered near Itakith, and everyone wants one, but there aren't enough to go around, so fights break out.
"Don't look at me. You know I never follow fashions."

Re: Prompts

A WIP snippet for your "designer colors" prompt:

Aliffifi ran her fingers over the bolts of cloth. The teal was gorgeous, but rough to the touch, and besides, her lagoon gown still stunned people. She didn’t need another like it.

No, she needed something different. “This color, what do you call it?”

“Golden glow, lady.” The tailor reached forward, rolling out a length. “Do you wish to accent the teal?”

Aliffifi ran her hand along the length. It was as smooth as Olarali’s hair, but richer in color. “No.”

“Oh, perhaps the deathfin grey?”

“Certainly not!” She peered at the tailor, letting her fingers play with the jeweled spider brooch at her neck. The grey would not be terrible with her skin and eyes, but it would not help her to shine either. “Give me a pad of paper, and I’ll show you what I have in mind.”

How about combining the two themes: What animals are important in northern and southern fashion, and how are they used?

Re: prompt

From your combination prompt, I got the free-verse poem "Getting the Goat," about the Northern fondness for the shaggy white fur of the rare mountain goats.

clothes of mythology

a dress made from Rainbow forest plants

a simple banquet

Re: Prompts

I was thinking of Clothes of Mythology when I started writing, but it kind of morphed over to A Simple Banquet, though I'm pretty sure it won't end with either topic being a major part of the story.

It's not done, but here's a snippet from it:

The tailor bustled around Lalya and Dini, muttering something about the foolishness of casting the taller man as the leading lady.

Lalya looked at Dini and raised an eyebrow. “He does realize this isn’t a theatrical production, right?”

Dini laughed. “Valoruu believes everything is a theatrical production, even a simple banquet. But he’s very good at what he does.”

“This is a theatrical production, young—” he measured Lalya’s waist, looking below with his eyes. “Woman?” He said it in a way that expressed disapproval and doubt, but morphed it into admiration. “The whole city will be watching. You have to be a credit to the company.”

Laced Leather

Well, before anyone else posted a prompt, I started a story about Kalitelm and Margaa, Bawdy stories and clothes. It's tentatively titled Laced Leather. It's 1200+ words, and so can be sponsored for $13.00.

I'm going to post it in the private creators' forums over at Torn World to make sure no one else has planned for Kalitelm or Margaa to be someplace else. I hope not--I can rewrite it with different characters, but I like how it turned out! However, I'll share it with a sponsor right away, in its current form.

Here are a few!

The colour of smoke
Dancing in the dark
Tiny feet!
A rainbow of ribbons
That was meant to be green!

Things I would like to see!
Shell art. Uses for shells in the hair, jewellery, etc.
Face paint
Natural makeup. Berries for lipstick? etc.

Re: Promts

Smoke is Omorth's favorite color, so I wrote a free-verse poem about that, "Smoke in the Wind." It comes into fashion periodically in different shades.
